Review of Hotel Waldhaus, Flims, Switzerland
Impressive hotel complex in a large park:
Under new management
We (family with a teenage son) have been to this hotel for four times and although most stays have been short we claim to have a good knowledge of it. The Waldhaus is in a splendid hotel park (the largest in Switzerland) and consists of three different „sub-hotels“ (we have been in all of them).
Right in the main building is the Grand Hotel
Right in the main building is the Grand Hotel
that I like most as we had a gorgeous mini suite when last staying there during Christmas time. There were two rooms with a balcony both having their own entrance to a marvelous bathroom (very spacious and modernly decorated). Last summer we had a junior suite in the Villa Silvana
which was also nice; there was one large room with a rather small bathroom (only a shower, no bathtub). As far as the third „sub-hotel“ is concerned (Grand Chalet Belmont) we have no recent experiences as we stayed there several years ago. At that time it was rather rustic but with spacious rooms.
Food wise you have quite a choice! Now you can find seven restaurants in the Waldhaus. The main restaurant (Grand Restaurant Rotonde) offers fine food (14 points Gault-Millau) with a wonderful view on the surroundings. An equal panorama view you have in the „Epoca“ where also discriminating gourmets will be satisfied (17 points Gault-Millau). We have been there four times and enjoyed it every time in the full! Concerning the other restaurants, we have no recent experiences. A few years ago, we visited the Chinese one but were not too excited about.
What I like very much in the Waldhaus is the Lounge Bar in a really fantastic Jugendstil hall although we had a not so nice experience there last summer when we ordered an (inexpensive) Prosecco, got an (expensive) glass of Champagne (that we only noticed on the check) and had to listen to the head waiter’s reprimands (waitress claimed we had ordered a „Cüpli“ – Swiss German expression for a glass of Champagne – that was just not the case and he stated that one should be able to distinguish Champagne from Proscecco just by tasting, but who is capable of doing this for sure?) Nevertheless, this bar is one of the most beautiful that I know.
For your wellbeing, there are three pools, a fitness and a gymnastic room, a spa, tennis courts, curling facilities etc.
And the Waldhaus is also a good place for parents as they care for kids (playground, petting zoo a.s.o.).
The service level is generally quite high even though the staff is far from being perfect, too many small mistakes are made, be it that they ask you whether you are with them for the first time when checking in (for the fourth time) or there is nobody who disposes of used towels and empty dishes on deck chairs in the sunbathing area.
All in all, a very good hotel in a nice setting (good for skiing in winter and for hikes in summer, and there are such beautiful small lakes in Flims).
Date of stay: December 2009
