Michelin is the most popular and influential restaurant guide in the world. It has been published by the tyre company Michelin since 1900. The guide lists recommended dining spots in many countries world wide, on an annual basis. Sometimes, it does not cover the whole country but only its most important cities. An example here is Austria where you only find ratings for Vienna and Salzburg. The best of the best restaurants are the Michelin starred ones:

  • 1 star: high-quality cooking, worth a stop
  • 2 stars: excellent cooking, worth a detour
  • 3 stars. exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey

In addition, there are two other labels:

  • Bib Gourmand (since 1997): good food at moderate prices
  • Green star (since 2020): excellence in sustainable gastronomy
