Review of Hotel The Damai, Lovina, Bali

Beautiful pool villa and great breakfast, but that was it:

Hotel The Damai is located in a remote part of north Bali, in the hills above Lovina, about a 10-minute shuttle ride away from this quiet town. The grounds are stunning, there are well kept gardens and magnificent sea views.

Accommodation

My husband and I had booked a pool villa for our three-day stay. And we were happy with our choice, especially when we caught sight of the other ones without pool on the way to our room. While ours was was located at the lower part of the property (no “through traffic”), the less expensive ones were closer to the lobby. As everyone had to pass them all the time, they do not offer much privacy.

The pool villa we had was gorgeous. There was a huge bedroom with a lounge area, both beautifully decorated. Then it featured an indoor bathroom with two sinks and a large outdoor shower. And best of all, there was this magnificent infinity pool with a splendid view of the sea, beautiful!

Having said this, we also encountered some negative points. The air condition was not very effective. Whereas the living room was very cold, the sleeping area was not cold enough. Furthermore, I would have preferred having an indoor shower as well as at certain times you would not want to shower outdoors, e.g. in the pouring rain. But that was it …

Food

As far as food was concerned, the breakfast was excellent. There was an amazing range of fresh fruits, delicious baked good and tasty hot entrees. We also dined twice at the hotel. Dinner took place at the poolside what was a nice thing to do.

As to the menu, I had the impression that the Damai tried hard to offer top notch cuisine but did not fully achieve doing so. There were lots of western choices yet only a small number of Balinese ones, which I found a pity. One night, we had to wait long until the food arrived. While already being quite impatient, an employee, looking like a managing one, came to our table and bragged about the restaurant’s qualities. We found this demeanor a bit inadequate. Overall, dinners were quite good yet not outstanding.

Facilities/staff

With regard to the facilities it can be said that neither the hotel pool (available to all guests) nor the spa were sufficient for a hotel of this class. Whereas the former was very small and showed age, we only had an average massage (included in the hotel rate) at the rather underwhelming spa premises.

The service quality was good without being superior. As the pool villas were butler-serviced there was a female butler who took care of us. She did a good job, but apart from her, none of the other staff made a lasting impression.

As a whole, we really enjoyed our beautiful pool villa, the exquisite breakfast and our butler’s care, but otherwise we were a bit disappointed by the hotel’s performance.
