Review of Hotel Ermitage, Schoenried, Switzerland

Newly renovated hotel (lobby), impressive facilities, friendly employees:

Together with friends (two couples in total) we spent one night at Hotel Ermitage, and this in context with the Menuhin-Festival Gstaad. On this occasion, we visited a concert (the Ermitage is the official partner of this festival).

The correspondent offer included among other things dinner at the hotel as well as transfer to and from the concert. We could make use of the Ermitage lounge too where they served champagne and snacks during the concert break. Everything was immaculately organized and to our satisfaction.

The hotel itself is situated on the main road going to Gstaad. Therefore, I would recommend to book a room overlooking the park. The property underwent a recent renovation. This is true for the lobby, bar, restaurant and a part of the garden. The result of the works is impressive!

As to the accommodation we had, it could have used an update too. It was a double room to the park at the eastern part of the hotel. While it was big enough, it was very narrow and dated. The bathroom was small and only had a bathtub. There was a nice, spacious balcony to the garden. But this feature could not compensate the poor general impression of the room. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay at the hotel.

Dinner was good, and the breakfast buffet was of a high quality. Especially the bread selection was impressive. Pity, that the orange juice was not freshly squeezed although there was juice station next to the breakfast buffet. Also the pastry selection was not satisfying, there was only one cake available. Employees were friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

On site you find three pools with different waters and a spa. I cannot comment on them as we did not have the time to use these amenities.

In summary, the Ermitage is a good choice for a stay in the Gstaad area. The facilities are up to date, staff is eager to please, and the food is fine. Unfortunately, certain rooms do not correspond to expectations you might have when it comes to five-star properties.

Date of stay: August 2012
