This is certainly the most stylish and trendiest place of Solothurn’s fine dining scene. The restaurant is – as its name suggests – an ancient salt house and is situated directly on the river (Aare) in Solothurn’s old town worth seeing. The cuisine is modern, the chef cooks in an European-Asian fusion style. I have been there a few times, but only for lunch. I cannot give an assessment for the dinner experience, which may be different because there is another food concept.

The Salzhaus has a two-course lunch box on offer for lunch from Mondays to Saturdays. This costs SFR 25, be it for starter and main or for main and dessert. If you want all three courses, you have to spend SFR 30. Mineral water in included in this rate. There is either a soup or a salad as starter. For main, you can choose between a meat, fish, vegetarian and pasta dish. As to dessert, the server brings a tablet with small glasses containing about 3 different sweets. While in earlier times I had the impression that the portions are too small, I cannot say so regarding my past two visits. Both times, I had enough although the portions are not large.

Sampled lunch box
When I had lunch at the Salzhaus the last time, our group had all the mains except the meat one. All the dishes – a salmon trout with sushi rice and wakame, asparagus with sauce hollandaise and new potatoes as well as Asian noodles with Singapore marinade and shrimps – were light and tasty. As dessert, I picked out custard with rhubarb compote. It was okay, although the compote was a bit overpowering.

Ambiance/staff/price
In my view, the restaurant is a jewel if you look at it from an architectural point of view. The historic building was renovated in a stylish, contemporary way without neglecting its original character. Staff is friendly and attentive. The price for the two-course lunch box is not exactly inexpensive, but I find it adequate, especially when considering that mineral water is included.

All in all, if you are looking for a contemporary lunch spot with a modern cuisine serving serious good food in Solothurn’s old town, then go there, you will not be disappointed.
