Review of Tower23 Hotel, San Diego

Sleek, modern hotel on the beach in a busy Pacific Beach area:

My husband and I booked a room at Tower23 Hotel after an extensive research; we looked at places in La Jolla, on Coronado and in downtown and didn’t succeed to find a congenial hotel.

When we arrived on a weekday evening the scene that met our eyes and ears took us aback. There were loud music coming from the terrace restaurant/bar and a crowd of rather young people having a good time. We felt a little bit out of place as we are middle aged and were worried about possible noise issues. This was also due to the fact that we were in the corner room on the second floor right above the restaurant/bar entrance. But our worries turned out to be unnecessary because later on when we went to the restaurant in order to have dinner the crowd had evaporated.

Tower23 is located right on the beach in the heart of the busy Pacific Beach area. Beyond the hotel about a half block away college kids are getting crazy but beach front is more quiet. The hotel offers great ocean views and is next to the Crystal Pier. There is a stunning beachside walkway next to the hotel which we appreciated very much. Tower23 is a modern hotel with a hip atmosphere. Onsite there is also a recommended restaurant with a great terrace serving trendy food. As mentioned above, there is a hot scene but the atmosphere still remains beach casual. The lounge deck on the second floor is the perfect place to unwind. Sitting on a deck chair near a decorative pool (No bathing!) and a fire pit and looking at the beach scenery is a relaxing thing to do.

The room we had belongs to the category “Surf Pad Queen/Queen”. It is furnished in a sleek way offering magnificent views of the ocean from the private balcony. The room is rather spacious and well-appointed. The tempurpedic beds are very comfortable. The bathroom is nice enough with a soaking tub and a separate shower. Unfortunately, there is neither a separate toilet nor a double sink.

We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel. An employee recommended Isabel’s Cantina, about five minutes away and we were very content with this breakfast spot serving Asian-Latin dishes.

On balance, we were very much in favour of this wonderfully located modern hotel with great ocean views although we have mixed feelings about the nearby party area which doesn’t go together with a cultivated beach stay.

Date of stay: October 2013
